Survey participation - Regional students and textbooks
Textbooks are often required to participate in courses at Miami, and also can be an expensive part of a student’s budget. You are invited to participate in a research project. The purpose of this research is to examine how Regional campus students purchase, access, and use textbooks and other course materials. This study is being conducted by a researcher from the Regional campus libraries of Miami University. Participation in this research is restricted to persons 18 years of age or older.
Completing the survey should take about 10 minutes. Your participation is voluntary, you may skip questions you do not want to answer, and you may stop at any time. The survey does not request information that would explicitly identify you. If you inadvertently include identifying information, such information will be removed from stored data. Only the researchers will have access to individual responses. Results of the survey will only be presented publicly as aggregate summaries. The survey will close on February 10.
As a thank you for completing the survey, you may also enter to win one of five $20 gift cards. The research survey and the contact information form will not be linked therefore the research data will remain as anonymous as you provided it.
Follow this link to the survey (or scan the QR code above):

Middletown -Textbooks on Reserve, D.E.I. and student support
I hope winter break has given everyone a chance to rest and re-group. Gardner-Harvey Library has been preparing for the start of the spring semester with some updates to our services. GHL has provided the Textbooks on Reserve (TOR) program for over 15 years and starting this spring we are expanding our collection by adding a special selection of textbooks for Middletown classes that we feel support diversity, equity, and inclusion at Miami.
If students or faculty members would like to have a textbook added to our TOR program I would be happy to help. The library is also a great resource for students who need to find free class materials. If you are a student struggling with textbook costs, or know someone who is, we would love to help you find resources at our library or help you request textbooks through other Ohio academic libraries.
While I have your attention (hopefully), located in The Lounge @ GHL students have access to free coffee and snacks, a fridge, and microwave. Also located in The Lounge is our Care Cabinet. Students can find hygiene supplies and other items that are free to take. We are always happy to accept donations. Please don’t hesitate to come over or send students over who could benefit from our free services.
Hoping you have a great semester!--

#MoveInMiami - Help students by funding our textbook collection
This year the Gardner-Harvey Library hopes to increase the number of textbooks we purchase and allow students to borrow (saving them the expense of textbooks or making it easier for them to catch up on reading and assignments while on campus). This is an exciting opportunity for us to raise gift funds to support this service and our other programming. Can we count on you?
If you are able to make even a small gift to the Gardner-Harvey Library (or our sister library in Hamilton), please use the form at http://www.givetomiamioh.org/regionallibraries. All gifts are tax deductible, and you will be emailed a receipt upon making a gift online. Gifts must be made on August 24 to qualify for this initiative.
Thank you very much for your time and your support of the library and our students!

Beyond Textbooks: Finding Alternatives Among Library Databases, E-Books, and Open Educational Resources
John will share case studies and methodologies for creating a flexible mash-up of materials to convey course content and achieve your learning objectives. Not only can this approach lead to the selection of resources that are more closely attuned to the course, but it also reduces students' costs.
Come with your course needs in mind and consider whether you'd like to seek textbook alternatives for fall and beyond. If you cannot attend in person, this event will be available on Webex. Please go to the CTL Website,www.mid.muohio.edu/ctl for more information. You may also access the handout for the session and the presentation online.

Textbooks on Reserve for Fall
Though a few books are still being added, we now have textbooks for 124 courses offered at Middletown (most of these were purchased by the library, and others are personal copies added by faculty members or purchased separately by academic departments). The full list is available here.
We had a very strong summer of textbook use. From the middle of May through the end of July we had 179 checkouts (easily our biggest summer ever, even without having all of the stats in). Don't forget the other methods we have for accessing textbooks through the library.
If you can help further spread the word that the textbooks are available, that would be most helpful. If you would like to correct information on our list or if you have suggestions on other courses we should consider buying textbooks for, please let us know.
We thank you for your use and support of this program!

How was the library used in 2009-2010?
These stats reflect what's happened this year, running from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Some stats we keep locally, others we pull from university-wide or OhioLINK-wide systems, and some are provided by database vendors.
Both a Borrower and a Lender Be
- GHL patrons checked out 4,583 books, DVDs, and videos from us (2,262 from our local collection, 1,475 ordered from other MU libraries, and 846 items ordered from OhioLINK - that means that more than half of the items used by campus patrons came from libraries beyond GHL). We also received 64 articles and 10 books and audiovisual items from libraries worldwide.
- The GHL collection registered 5,925 checkouts (that's the 2,262 items checked out by Middletown patrons above, plus 2,076 items sent to OhioLINK users, 1,418 sent to other MU libraries, and 169 items sent to libraries around the world - that means that more than 60% of the uses of our materials came from libraries beyond GHL). We also sent 76 periodical articles to libraries worldwide.
- GHL patrons checked out 3,851 reserve items from us (this includes faculty-placed course reserves, textbooks on reserve, laptops, Wii games, and other equipment).
- In addition to the printed or physical materials above, Middletown patrons have downloaded 6,894 e-books from the OhioLINK E-Book Center.
- In terms of building up our collection, Middletown faculty and staff ordered 1,665 items to add to our collection this year.
The Quest for Information
- Middletown patrons have performed 52,931 searches in databases provided to us by Ebsco and those hosted by OhioLINK. Statewide, 52% of database searches are done in Academic Search Complete, and our results are right on that average.
- Middletown patrons downloaded 20,332 full-text articles from the Electronic Journal Center. This is in addition to full-text articles found right within Ebsco or other databases.
- As part of getting to these databases, 54 people visit our web site every day. That's a total of 19,965 visits for the year, by 5,717 unique individuals.
A Place for Work, Study, and Remove from the World
- GHL is open 65 hours per week.
- We average 260 visitors per day, for a total of 75,350 visits this year.
- We regularly schedule the library learning lab (GRD 111) for occasional class sessions. We also had 12 classes meet there weekly during fall semester and 9 met there during this spring. In March 2009 we began scheduling COMPASS placement testing sessions in the lab on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays for incoming Middletown students.
- Our two STAR Lounges have been checked out 338 times this year. STAR Lounge 2 was used weekly by a class for its class meetings in the spring semester.
Helping You Find What You Need
- Inside and outside of the library, we gave library instruction presentations in 80 classes this year, reaching 1435 students. The courses represented were from 19 different departments.
- Our Blackboard Embedded Librarian program reached students in 43 course sections during the academic year. We have reached over 750 students through the program and helped them with their information needs.
- During calendar year 2009, we did our best to keep track of the questions you asked us at our InfoDesk. Here's what we learned from that tallying:
- You asked us 5245 questions during the year.
- That averages out to 19.5 questions per day. This is in addition to more routine, but essential, activities that we didn't count, like checking books out and back in.
- 19% of those questions came by phone, and 2% through instant-messaging, with the rest in-person (we also get a lot of questions in email, but we did not track those).
- The topics of those questions were fairly evenly divided, with nearly 20% in each of the categories of research (where to look for articles on X, etc.), technology (how to double space in Word, etc.), circulation (when will the book I requested arrive, etc.), and the ever-popular "other" category.
- 90% of the questions came between 8:00am and 5:00pm.
- One key part missing from these figures is off-campus use of library resources: all off-campus use is tallied as MU-wide use, so we do not know how many patrons are using databases from home.
- We don't have stats for all database searches - we're missing uses of Lexis-Nexis and other databases.
- We haven't surveyed the campus population at large about their use of our resources and their perception of the quality of our service for some time. We are hoping to offer such a survey in the next academic year, but we hope in the meantime you'll let us know what you think about the library, what you need from us, and what materials we should order for the collection.
On Average
Taking these numbers and guesstimating a total Middletown community of 2500 students, faculty and staff members (and including community patrons), here's what can be said about the average person on campus. She:
- visits the library every nine days.
- checks three items out from the library in a year (reserves and local/MU/OhioLINK collection items)
- performs 21 database searches per year.
- accesses the library web site eight times per year.
- views 2.75 e-books each year.
- participates in a library instruction session at least every other year (if she is a student).
Thanks to everyone for making the library and its resources a vital part of your academic lives!

Accessing Textbooks Through the Library
1. The library may have purchased the course textbook as part of our Textbooks on Reserve program. The current list of available textbooks (arranged by course) is available at http://www.mid.muohio.edu/library/textbookreserves.htm The library will also purchase additional textbooks as requested for Summer Semester. Each textbook may be borrowed from the library for two hours, or if checked out after 5:00pm, it can be kept until 9:00am the next morning.
2. Faculty members may have placed textbooks or other materials on library reserve. Many of the textbooks provided by faculty members are on the list linked above. If a faculty member would like to place an item on reserve, please consult the information at http://www.mid.muohio.edu/library/reserves.htm and use the online form at the bottom of that page.
3. Students may be able to borrow a copy of the textbook from another Miami University Library or from one of our OhioLINK library partners around the state. Materials may be borrowed for up to 15 weeks through OhioLINK. The starting point is to use our library catalog at http://www.lib.muohio.edu/multifacet (this searches all Miami libraries) and then to click on “Request Item.” Library staff would be happy to run searches and assist anyone in checking the availability of a title in OhioLINK.
4. Some textbooks are available as electronic books purchased through OhioLINK. A quick way to search these e-book collections (along with the print collections of OhioLINK libraries) is to use the University System of Ohio’s Textbook Portal at http://textbooks.uso.edu/ Enter either the ISBN or a combination of the title and author of the book to see if it is available.
The library stands ready to assist any student or faculty member who needs help with these matters. Please contact us at 513-727-3222, midref@lib.muohio.edu, IM us @ askghl, or contact any of our staff members directly using the information at http://www.mid.muohio.edu/library/contactus.htm

Free textbooks? A new source for course texts
A new site devised for California's community colleges identifies and offers peer review of over 400 open textbooks and links to the textbooks themselves. Check out the Open Educational Resource Center for California to see the collection they've amassed.
We've been using a free Web version of a textbook for the EDT 251: Effective Use of Libraries course, and it has worked well so far.

Textbooks for Fall: where we stand
We now have books for 94 courses offered at Middletown that the library has purchased, and textbooks on hand for at least 17 other courses provided by individual faculty members or departments. The full list is available here.
We've already had 79 checkouts of these items in the first two weeks of class. If you can help further spread the word that the textbooks are available, that would be most helpful. If you want to correct information on our list, please let us know. If you have suggestions on other courses we should consider buying textbooks for, be sure to contact me.
We thank you for your use and support of this program!

Textbooks on Reserve Wrap-Up
TOR started as a collection of textbooks that covered about 40 courses at Miami Middletown. We now offer textbooks that serve as the main text for over 70 courses, along with supplementary materials that accompany several texts.
Use of the program has grown steadily over the last two years. This fall (2007) we tallied 232 items being checked out for use, and that was exceeded in the spring (2008) for a total of 369 checkouts. As of May 12, 2008, the textbooks included in the program have been checked out 793 times since the inception of TOR. Just last week we passed the 800 checkout mark, meaning that items held in the program have circulated an average of nearly 8 times each.
The ten most popular textbooks used by students at MUM are the following (listed with their total lifetime checkouts):
- Elementary and Intermediate Algebra (MTH 101/102) - 98
- Panorama (SPN 101/102) - 77
- Prealgebra (MTH 002) - 74
- Materials and Processes in Manufacturing (ENT 152) - 55
- Engineering Materials (ENT 151) - 48
- Hole's Human Anatomy & Physiology (ZOO 171) - 35
- General Chemistry (CHM 137/141) - 34
- New Perspectives on Microsoft Office 2007 (CIT 154) - 29
- Psychology (PSY 111) - 28
- Microbiology, a Systems Approach (MBI 111/161) - 23
Panorama had been our most popular book for four straight semesters, but Spring 2008 uses pushed the MTH 101/102 book ahead.
The numbers only tell part of the story. Each checkout represents a student who needed to use a given book; perhaps for just two hours, perhaps overnight. Students have taken books to class, studied them in the library, and worked on problem sets at home. The stories that we hear as we interact with these students has continued to motivate us to build and maintain TOR.
In building this collection of textbooks we have benefited tremendously from the donation of textbooks by faculty members and students, funds provided by Miami Middletown Student Government, the use of department library acquisitions funds to purchase textbooks, and the library funding we are provided by the campus. In the year ahead, we will receive further funding for TOR from a donor (more on this later) which will help us keep up our current coverage of courses and expand that reach.

Pssst! Need a textbook?
Textbooks can be checked out for two hours at a time. If you check one out within two hours of our closing time, you can keep it overnight (it's due back at 9:00am the next morning).
See a full list of the courses for which we have textbooks at http://www.mid.muohio.edu/library/textbooks.cfm We have updated the collection for spring semester and added texts for the following courses:
EDP 201

Textbooks on Reserve: new look; collection grows
We ask for your help in publicizing the textbook collection to your students, advisees, or classmates. Faculty members may wish to review the list to ensure that we have listed their textbooks correctly.
The Library is extremely grateful to the Engineering Technology (ENT) department for their decision to use departmental library funds to purchase 15 textbooks for 14 of their courses. Those textbooks will be added to the collection and to the web site shortly.
Those 14 courses join 33 others with textbooks already provided by the project, and 16 more courses for which faculty members have provided textbooks. If my math is correct (and I have the proper textbooks to consult), there are now textbooks on reserve for 63 courses offered at Miami Middletown. Awesome!
Saturday, January 06, 2007
Even More Textbooks on Reserve!
Once again, we hope that the Textbooks on Reserve will be beneficial to students who are unable to purchase (or are delayed in purchasing) required textbooks, or who forget to bring their textbooks to campus. The ready availability of these sources should enhance student learning since the sources are on hand for easy use. One copy of each textbook is available, and the books may be checked out for two-hour use.
The Library asks for your help in making students aware of the program. As well, if we have overlooked a course for inclusion or if you have a textbook to donate, please let us know. If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact John Burke.
