April's Middletown Book for Discussion on Zoom: The Sun Also Rises

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Tuesday, April 27.  Our title is Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.  Here is a brief summary of this tale of expatriates from "the Lost Generation" and their travels in France and Spain in the 1920s:

"The Sun Also Rises stands as perhaps the most impressive first novel ever written by an American writer. A roman a clef about a group of American and English expatriates on an excursion from Paris's Left Bank to Pamplona for the July fiesta and its climactic bull fight, a journey from the center of a civilization spiritually bankrupted by the First World War to a vital, God-haunted world in which faith and honor have yet to lose their currency, the novel captured for the generation that would come to be called "Lost" the spirit of its age."

Here is where you can find the book:
  • There are several copies available through MiamiOhioLINK, and SearchOhio.  All of our statewide delivery services are up and running.  We do have our curbside pickup operating as well as in-house pickup.
  • Amazon has the paperback, Kindle, and audiobook available, and Bookshop.org has links to purchase the title from independent booksellers.
Our group is always finding interesting titles to share, and we look forward to the new things you'll bring to the table.  On March 30th, the members of the group had a spirited discussion of The Grapes of Wrath, and also shared these titles to add to your reading/viewing lists:
  • Greenlights, Matthew McConaughey
  • OK Boomer, Let's Talk: How My Generation Got Left Behind, Jill Filipovic
  • IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives, Chris Stedman
  • I Had a Hammer, Hank Aaron
  • The Outlander Book Series, Diana Gabaldon
  • The Dutch House, Ann Patchett
  • When You Read This, Mary Adkins
  • Killing Commendatore, Haruki Murakami
We will meet at 12 pm on the 27th in Zoom at

You may also join by calling +1 253-215-8782‬

Finding scholarly articles online: Internet Archive Scholar and Google Scholar

The Internet Archive Scholar is a new resource for you to use when searching for scholarly information. It includes over 25 million digitized research articles that have been preserved by the Internet Archive and its ongoing scans of information online.  It brings together historical materials along with more current open access publications that may be hard to access elsewhere.  A fuller explanation of Internet Archive Scholar is available in this Internet Archive blog post.

You may have used Google Scholar in the past, and this is an opportunity to remind you about this resource and how it works.  The reach of Google Scholar is much larger than that of Internet Archive Scholar, but not everything is available in full-text.  And some of the full-text access is only available to you through licensed materials that Miami University Libraries and OhioLINK subscribe to.  You can watch our Two Minute Tutorial on Google Scholar for more information on using this tool.

Both of these resources are now linked on the library's Google Scholar tab for your easy access.  And don't forget, in addition to these free resources, you also have access to Miami University Libraries' Articles & More search and the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center to find scholarly information.  Happy searching, and happier finding!

Survey participation - Student use of E-books

You are invited to participate in a research project being conducted by the librarians at Miami University Regionals regarding regional campus student usage of library-owned e-books and e-textbooks to complete their coursework. Results will inform our purchasing decisions, instructional approaches, and marketing efforts.

If you agree to participate, we would like you to complete an online survey (found below). Completing the survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes. You are free to stop taking this survey if you prefer not to answer any question. Confidential search data will be kept anonymous and secure. Once you complete the survey, you will be directed to a second survey for you to enter your UniqueID for a drawing for a $25 Walmart gift card (your responses on the first survey are not connected to your UniqueID and are completely anonymous). The survey will close on April 9.

The project has been approved by the Miami University Institutional Review Board. If you have any questions about this project, please contact Mark Shores at shoresml@miamioh.edu

There's a new 3D printer in town: GHL has added the Raise3D Pro2

The TEC Lab Makerspace at the Gardner-Harvey Library has added a new 3D printer:  the Raise3D Pro 2!  This printer expands the size of objects that we can print, and also offers a higher quality print resolution.  It can use a wide array of filament types, and is completely enclosed, using an air filtration system.

You can request a 3D print and read more about 3D printing on our TEC Lab Makerspace guide.

Below are some answers to questions about 3D printing.  Let us know if you have others by using the contact information on the guide.

How much does it cost?

3D printing charges are based on how long it takes to print an item.  The first hour of printing is free.  Each additional hour will cost $1.00.

How big of an object can I print?

Our largest printer can print in these dimensions: 11 × 12 × 11.8 inches (280 × 305 × 300 mm)

What colors can I print in?

We have many filament colors.  See our current list.

Can I print anything I want to?

We ask that you respect the intellectual property of others and follow U.S. copyright laws, and not create any objects for the purpose of endangering anyone, both in keeping with the Miami University 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing Policy.

New books (and more) added to the Gardner-Harvey Library in February!

If you've been thinking about reading a book, we have many new ones (plus a lot of older ones) ready to go!

Take a look at our New Books shelves or skim down our new materials list of items we added to the collection during February 2021! We added 177 books, e-books, DVDs, and other items during that time, thanks to your selections and suggestions. The list can be sorted by call number, area of our collection, or by title.  There is definitely something here for everyone!

Here are ten titles from the list, to give you an idea of what we've been buying:

  • This is how they tell me the world ends : the cyberweapons arms race / Nicole Perlroth
  • College belonging : how first-year and first-generation students navigate campus life / Lisa M. Nunn
  • The uberfication of the university / Gary Hall
  • A bright ray of darkness / Ethan Hawke
  • The prophets : a novel / Robert Jones, Jr
  • The light ages : the surprising story of medieval science / Seb Falk
  • Deep learning / John D. Kelleher
  • Extraterrestrial : the first sign of intelligent life beyond Earth / Avi Loeb
  • The Internet in everything : freedom and security in a world with no off switch / Laura DeNardis
  • Consent : a memoir / Vanessa Springora
  • A place for everything : the curious history of alphabetical order / Judith Flanders

This tag will show you all of the prior lists of new materials, in reverse chronological order. We are eager to hear from you about individual items you would like us to buy, or types of items we should be on the look out for, or general subject areas we should build up in the collection.

Thank you for all of your suggestions and requests!  If you have a suggestion of something to order, please use our "Tell GHL to Buy It" form, email Amy Carmichael (carmicae@miamioh.edu), or drop by the library with your request. And pass your general suggestions or comments about the collection to us in those same ways.

Thanks again for keeping our collection vibrant and your information needs met!

Visit the Human Library on March 10 - Ask Questions and Hear Unique Stories

The Gardner-Harvey Library is reaching beyond our normal array of books and DVDs and articles and sharing the stories of a collection of people:  a Human Library.  This effort, inspired by a group in Denmark (https://humanlibrary.org), is all about the opportunity to share our stories with one another.  We believe it is powerful to communicate with other people, and in particular to have the opportunity to talk to someone you would not ordinarily have access to.

We will be holding the Human Library on Wednesday, March 10 from Noon until 1:00pm on Zoom (use this link to join: Join Zoom Meeting). Add this event to your Google Calendar!

Our human books each represent a different group, occupation or identity in our society. See a full list of our books at the Reserve link below (you can also watch a short video of some of our books).  You will have the opportunity to spend 5-10 minutes in breakout rooms with as many books as you would like and hear their stories.

We would like you to Reserve Your Books ahead of the session to make it easier for us to have you meet with them.

Maybe there is a question that readers have always wanted to ask someone about their hobby, their religion, their job, or their way of being in the world.  Through conversation we can work against bias, prejudices, and stereotypes and enhance common understanding.  We are eager for you to join us!

Thank you so much for considering taking part.  Let us know if you have any questions.
