Sign up today for our Diversity Book Discussion of Passing! (Sept. 22)

The Regional Campus Libraries and the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are co-sponsoring a book discussion for students, faculty, and staff!  Join us for the discussion of Passing by Nella Larsen on Thursday, September 22, from Noon until 1:00pm.

Here is a brief synopsis of the book:

"Clare and Irene, two childhood friends, lost touch when Clare's father died and she moved in with two white aunts. By hiding that Clare was part-black, they allowed her to 'pass' as a white woman and marry a white racist. Irene lives in Harlem, commits herself to racial uplift, and marries a black doctor. The novel centers on the meeting of the two childhood friends later in life, and the unfolding of events as each woman is fascinated and seduced by the other's daring lifestyle. The novel traces a tragic path as Irene becomes paranoid that her husband is having an affair with Clare." (publisher)

The discussion will be simulcast to both locations of the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (100 Johnston Hall at Middletown and 114 Rentschler Hall at Hamilton) for attendees who would like to meet face-to-face.  You will also be able to attend via Zoom. Lunch will be provided for face-to-face attendees.

Just use our sign up form so we will know if you're coming to one of the Centers for lunch, or if you'll join us on Zoom.  You can also tell us how you'd like to receive your free copy of the book (provided by the Center for Diversity , Equity, and Inclusion).  We look forward to reading and talking with you!

We add many new items to the collection each month, and we hope you'll check some out. Take a look at our New Books shelves or skim down our new materials list of items we added to the collection in July!

We added 152 books, e-books, DVDs, and other items during that time, thanks to your selections and suggestions. The list can be sorted by call number, area of our collection, or by title. There is definitely something here for everyone!

Here are ten titles from the list, to give you an idea of what we've been buying:
  • Where research begins : choosing a research project that matters to you (and the world) / Thomas S. Mullaney and Christopher Rea
  • Dungeons 'n' durags : one black nerd's comical quest of racial identity and crisis of faith / Ron Dawson
  • Beep : inside the unseen world of baseball for the blind / David Wanczyk
  • The nowhere office : reinventing work and the workplace of the future / Julia Hobsbawm
  • This is all I got : a new mother's search for home / by Lauren Sandler

  • The trans guide to mental health and well-being / Katy Lees
  • Climate change as class war : building socialism on a warming planet / Matthew T. Huber
This tag will show you all of the prior lists of new materials, in reverse chronological order. We are eager to hear from you about individual items you would like us to buy, or types of items we should be on the look out for, or general subject areas we should build up in the collection.

If you have a suggestion of something to order, please use our "Tell GHL to Buy It" form, email Alan Kelley (kelleya@miamioh.edu), or drop by the library with your request. And pass your general suggestions or comments about the collection to us in those same ways.

We're just starting our fiscal year for 2022/23, so we look forward to your suggestions of items to add to the collection.

September's Middletown Book for Discussion: Crying in H Mart

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Wednesday, September 14.  Our title is Michelle Zauner's Crying in H Mart.  Here is a brief summary:

"From the indie rockstar of Japanese Breakfast fame, an unflinching, powerful memoir about growing up Korean-American, losing her mother, and forging her own identity. In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up the only Asian-American kid at her school in Eugene, Oregon;of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the east coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her."

Here is where you can find the book:
  • There are several copies available through MiamiOhioLINK, and SearchOhio.
  • Amazon has the hardcover, Kindle, and audiobook available, and Bookshop.org has links to purchase the title from independent booksellers.
Our group is always finding interesting titles to share, and we look forward to the new things you'll bring to the table.  In addition to discussing Homegoing, the group also shared these titles for consideration at their August 1 meeting:
  • You Are A Badass At Making Money, Jen Sincero
  • The Last Dress from Paris, Jade Beer
  • The Next Thing You Know, Jessica Strawser
  • The Humans, Matt Haig
  • Resident Alien (Sci-fi network)
  • Crying in H Mart, Michelle Zauner
  • Baudolino, Umberto Eco
We will meet at 12 pm on the 14th both in Room 123 in the Library and in Zoom at

Passcode: 252331
Add this event to your Google Calendar!  (which includes the Zoom information)

Please come along to our discussion to share what you've been reading/watching/listening to/experiencing!
