March's Middletown Book for Discussion: The Magnolia Palace (March 24)

 

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Friday, March 24.  Our title is Fiona Davis' The Magnolia Palace.  Here is a brief summary:

We add many new items to the collection each month, and we hope you'll check some out. Take a look at our New Books shelves or the New Media Display for some of the titles, or skim down our new materials list of items we added to the collection in January!  You may also want to take a look at the new and old books on our Black History Month display near the front entrance.

Survey participation - Regional students and textbooks

Textbooks are often required to participate in courses at Miami, and also can be an expensive part of a student’s budget. You are invited to participate in a research project. The purpose of this research is to examine how Regional campus students purchase, access, and use textbooks and other course materials. This study is being conducted by a researcher from the Regional campus libraries of Miami University. Participation in this research is restricted to persons 18 years of age or older. 

Completing the survey should take about 10 minutes. Your participation is voluntary, you may skip questions you do not want to answer, and you may stop at any time. The survey does not request information that would explicitly identify you. If you inadvertently include identifying information, such information will be removed from stored data. Only the researchers will have access to individual responses. Results of the survey will only be presented publicly as aggregate summaries. The survey will close on February 10.

As a thank you for completing the survey, you may also enter to win one of five $20 gift cards. The research survey and the contact information form will not be linked therefore the research data will remain as anonymous as you provided it.

Middletown -Textbooks on Reserve, D.E.I. and student support

Good afternoon,

I hope winter break has given everyone a chance to rest and re-group. Gardner-Harvey Library has been preparing for the start of the spring semester with some updates to our services.  GHL has provided the Textbooks on Reserve (TOR) program for over 15 years and starting this spring we are expanding our collection by adding a special selection of textbooks for Middletown classes that we feel support diversity, equity, and inclusion at Miami.  

For a full list of classes/textbooks or to learn more about the program, check out our TOR page. Books that fall under our new DEI selection are highlighted in red on our main list. The DEI TOR initiative is a university wide program, so please check with your home campus for their offerings.  

If students or faculty members would like to have a textbook added to our TOR program I would be happy to help. The library is also a great resource for students who need to find free class materials. If you are a student struggling with textbook costs, or know someone who is, we would love to help you find resources at our library or help you request textbooks through other Ohio academic libraries.

While I have your attention (hopefully), located in The Lounge @ GHL students have access to free coffee and snacks, a fridge, and microwave. Also located in The Lounge is our Care Cabinet. Students can find hygiene supplies and other items that are free to take. We are always happy to accept donations. Please don’t hesitate to come over or send students over who could benefit from our free services.

Join Dr. Tammie Gerke, Teaching Professor in Geology, in the Gardner-Harvey Library SPACE (GRD 014) or join us on Zoom (Passcode 745987) as she discusses her contributions to archaeological work in the ancient Greek colony of Apollonia.

The talk is also in recognition of the forthcoming publication of a book on the expedition, A Sanctuary in the Hora of Illyrian Apollonia: Excavations at the Bonjaknt Site 2004-2006 (Material and Visual Culture of the Ancient Mediterranean World), which Dr. Gerke contributed to.  We have ordered a copy and we will be happy to check it out to you as soon as we receive it!

National Park Talk: Great Sand Dunes National Park

Join us for an overview of Great Sand Dunes National Park and its geology on Tuesday, November 15 at 4:45pm, either in the Gardner-Harvey Library SPACE (Room GRD 014 on the library's lower level) or on Zoom (Join us in Zoom - Passcode 017640).

Dr. Tammie L. Gerke, Teaching Professor in Geology at Miami University, will share the geology and other interesting information about the national park. Get your questions answered and participate in a lively discussion on this national treasure.

This is the third of three National Parks Talks that Dr. Gerke will present this semester, all highlighting some of the newest parks.  Look for her upcoming talk on Albanian Discoveries: the Excavation of the Unknown Temple of Apollonia on Tuesday, Nov. 29th, at 6:30pm.
She discusses her contributions to archaeological work in the ancient Greek colony of Apollonia.
