New books added to the Gardner-Harvey Library in January!

We are adding many new items to the collection each month, and making sure that you can see them on display! Watch for our recent DVD display, as well as our ongoing New Books shelves (as shown above). See our new materials list of items we added to the collection in January! We added 147 books, e-books, DVDs, and other items during that time, thanks to your selections and suggestions. The list can be sorted by call number, area of our collection, or by title.

VolunTEC Lab: Scarves (make them for yourself and others)

For the first VolunTEC Lab of the semester we will be creating no-sew scarves for kids!

As always, you can make one to give and make one to take.

Completed scarves will be donated to local schools for kids in need.   

The program will run on Wednesday, February 13, between 11am and 1pm in Hawk Haven on the main floor of Johnston Hall.

Guest Workshop: Kay Helps You Create Jewelry

Join us on February 19 between 11:00am and 1:00pm to create your own jewelry.  This workshop will be led by Kay, a student employee at Miami University Middletown. 

Kay will be offering her knowledge to participants as they create their own jewelry. 

Stop in the TEC Lab (Room 125 GRD) at any time during the workshop hours to create your own unique jewelry piece. This workshop is free and open to the public.

How to TEC: Design & Cut Vinyl, Operate a Heat Press

For this First Wednesday TEC Lab Workshop, participants will be learning how to design and cut their own heat transfer vinyl designs, as well as how to use a heat press. 

Participants will be able to use their new knowledge to design their own tote bag. 

This workshop is free and open to the public. 

Join us on February 6 at anytime between 11am-1pm & 6pm-8pm in the TEC Lab (Room 125) at Gardner-Harvey Library.

Dr. Tammie Gerke’s National Park Talks: Isle Royale National Park (at Middletown)

Join us as Dr. Gerke talks talks about Isle Royale National Park. Stop by to hear about the geology and other interesting information about the park.

This session will run Wednesday, February 27th from 4:45pm to 6:15pm with time for questions and discussion. The event will be held in the seating area at the entrance of the Gardner-Harvey Library.

All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be provided.

February's Middletown book discussion title: The Reckoning

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Tuesday, February 19 to discuss John Grisham's The Reckoning.  We will meet at 12 pm in Room 124 in the Library.   

Here is a brief summary of the title, along with links to request the book from Miami, OhioLINK, and SearchOhio libraries (Just click "Request" and choose "Miami University" from the dropdown list.  Then enter your UniqueID and password, and the library from which you would like to retrieve the item):  

"Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946. he rose early, drove into town, walked into the Church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell. As if the murder wasn't shocking enough, it was even more baffling that Pete's only statement about it, to the sheriff, to his defense attorney, to the judge, to his family and friends, and to the people of Clanton, was "I have nothing to say." And so the murder of the esteemed Reverend Bell became the most mysterious and unforgettable crime Ford County had ever known."

Great Decisions 2019 - Discuss Global Issues on the Middletown Campus!

Great Decisions is a national program of the Foreign Policy Association. For 100 years the mission of FPA has been to serve as a catalyst for developing awareness, understanding, and informed opinion on U.S. foreign policy and global issues. Through its balanced, nonpartisan programs and publications, the FPA encourages citizens to participate in the foreign policy process. The public is invited to the following eight Great Decision sessions, sponsored by the Middletown chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). In addition to the background reading from the program booklet, a DVD with additional background on the topic is shown at each meeting. Anyone with personal background information on the various topics is particularly welcome to participate.             

All sessions will be held from 1:00 - 2:30 pm at the Gardner Harvey Library, Miami University Middletown campus on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month:
