Make glowing flowers for May, and to give away, at the TEC Lab!

In this month's TEC Lab workshop, we're going to make glowing flowers to enjoy as May begins.  We'll also prepare some to deliver to patients at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati to light up their hearts.

Come by to make one for yourself, and help us prepare some to give away.

Drop in on May 2, between 11am-1pm OR between 6pm-8pm in Room 125 Gardner-Harvey Library.

We'll create flowers from paper, add stems, and insert LED lights and batteries to add a little spark (as it were).  Other flower projects, and LED projects, will also be available for your making delight.

All are welcome to attend.

Remember, if you attend two or more of our library events in Spring 2018, you will be entered in a drawing for a Kindle Fire tablet.

Textbook Alternatives: How Three Regionals Faculty Members Made Them Work

Join us on Monday, April 23 from Noon to 1:00pm for a discussion of how three Miami Regionals faculty have incorporated textbook alternatives into one or more of their courses.

Our panel features:

Dan Gladish, Professor of Biology
Camilla McMahon, Assistant Professor of Psychological Science
Dan Young, Assistant Professor of Political Science

Come hear about their experiences in choosing textbook alternatives and using them with their students.  We will also discuss how the Regional Campus Libraries can assist you in finding textbook alternatives.

This event will be simulcast between Room 300 Phelps (Hamilton) and Room 111 Thesken (Middletown), with panelists and librarians in each room.

We hope to see you there!

May's Middletown book discussion title: A Gentleman in Moscow

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Wednesday, May 9 to discuss Amor Toll's A Gentleman in Moscow.  We will meet at 12 pm in Room 124 in the Library.

Here is a brief summary of the title, along with links to request the book from Miami, OhioLINK, and SearchOhio libraries (Just click "Request" and choose "Miami University" from the dropdown list.  Then enter your UniqueID and password, and the library from which you would like to retrieve the item):

"A Gentleman in Moscow immerses us in . . . the story of Count Alexander Rostov. When, in 1922, he is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery. Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count's endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose."

Read the book (or read something else interesting), then come along to our discussion to share what else you've been reading/watching/listening to/experiencing, and help us plan our future readings.

Have an idea for a book to discuss?  Let us know and check out our page of past and future reads at http://www.mid.miamioh.edu/library/bookdiscussion.htm

New books added to the Gardner-Harvey Library in March!

See our new materials list of items we added to the collection in March! We added 229 books, e-books, DVDs, and other items during that time, thanks to your selections and suggestions. The list can be sorted by call number, area of our collection, or by title.

Here are eight titles from the list, to give you an idea of what we've been buying:
  • Fifty million rising : the new generation of working women transforming the Muslim world / Saadia Zahidi
  • Policing Black bodies : how Black lives are surveilled and how to work for change / Angela J. Hattery and Earl Smith
  • Killer of sheep : the Charles Burnett collection [videorecording]
  • The Sparsholt affair / Alan Hollinghurst
  • What are we doing here? : essays / Marilynne Robinson
  • Radical technologies : the design of everyday life / Adam Greenfield
  • How to write and present technical information / Charles H. Sides
  • Algorithms of oppression : how search engines reinforce racism / Safiya Umoja Noble
This tag will show you all of the prior lists of new materials, in reverse chronological order. We are eager to hear from you about individual items you would like us to buy, or types of items we should be on the lookout for, or general subject areas we should build up in the collection.

This month we're adding some new materials along with replacements for items that have gone missing from the collection (and those that patrons have chosen to replace). We're looking forward to what you'll recommend next!

If you have a suggestion of something to order, please use our "Tell GHL to Buy It" form, email Amy Carmichael (carmicae@miamioh.edu), or drop by the library with your request. And pass your general suggestions or comments about the collection to us in those same ways.

Thanks again for keeping our collection vibrant and your information needs met!
