July's Middletown book discussion title: House of Sand and Fog

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Wednesday, July 31 to discuss Andre Dubus' House of Sand and Fog.  We will meet at 12 pm in Room 124 in the Library.

Here is a brief summary of the title, along with links to request the book from Miami, OhioLINK, and SearchOhio libraries (Just click "Request" and choose "Miami University" from the dropdown list.  Then enter your UniqueID and password, and the library from which you would like to retrieve the item):

"Colonel Behrani, once a wealthy man in Iran, is now a struggling immigrant willing to bet everything he has to restore his family's dignity. Kathy Nicolo is a troubled young woman whose house is all she has left, and who refuses to let her hard-won stability slip away from her. Sheriff Lester Burdon, a married man who finds himself falling in love with Kathy, becomes obsessed with helping her fight for justice. Drawn by their competing desires to the same small house in the California hills and doomed by their tragic inability to understand one another, the three converge in an explosive collision course."

Read the book (or read something else interesting), then come along to our discussion to share what else you've been reading/watching/listening to/experiencing, and help us plan our future readings.

Libraries & Mental Health

Have you seen The Public, a movie about homelessness, set in Cincinnati, Ohio?

Today some urban libraries are hiring social workers to address the needs of homelessness and  mental illness.  Libraries are public institutions that are open to all.  Library staff are serving on the front line, even as many other institutions have closed their doors.  Perhaps community-based health services or partnerships with organizations willing to help would lighten the load for many?

Sometimes serving the public takes a toll on librarians.  Here is one librarian's reflections on her experience as compared with the movie.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

May's Middletown book discussion title: Unsheltered

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Tuesday, May 28 to discuss Barbara Kingsolver's Unsheltered.

"Unsheltered is the compulsively readable story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum in Vineland, New Jersey, navigating what seems to be the end of the world as they know it. With history as their tantalizing canvas, these characters paint a startlingly relevant portrait of life in precarious times when the foundations of the past have failed to prepare us for the future.  "

Read the book (or read something else interesting), then come along to our discussion to share what else you've been reading/watching/listening to/experiencing, and help us plan our future readings.

Have an idea for a book to discuss?  Let us know and check out our page of past and future reads at http://www.mid.miamioh.edu/library/bookdiscussion.htm
