Stop by the TEC Lab in the Gardner Harvey Library and carve your initials in to a wooden heart with wood burning pens. Keep your creation for yourself, or give it as a Valentine's gift.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 between 12pm to 2pm.  Drop in at any time between those hours to participate.  The event is free and open to the public.  See you there!

Enjoy a hot beverage and mints while you study at the Library!

The Library will offer free coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and mints all during finals week, starting on Monday, December 7th. It will be set up in our entrance area from roughly 8:00am to 8:00pm, Monday through Thursday, and from 8:00am to 5:00pm on Friday. Please drop on by and enjoy a cup!

It's our way of making your last minute studying and paper/project preparation a bit more relaxing. Thanks for being a part of our library community!

Library Open On Saturday Before Finals - Find Study Space and Refreshing Beverages and Mints!

The Gardner-Harvey Library will offer extra study hours to students on Saturday, December 5, 2015. We will be open from Noon until 4:00pm that day. If you need a quiet place to study, please come to the library and use our open seating areas, our STAR lounges, or the Group Study Area downstairs. Staff will be on hand to provide assistance.

Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and mints will be available to help you stay aware and awake.

Find it, Scan it, Build it: 3D Printing at the TEC Lab!

Interested in 3D printing, but not sure where to start?  Our  November TEC Lab workshop will get you on the right track.  Learn how to find 3D models that have been posted online, how to scan real world objects so that they can be printed, and how to use simple computer-aided design software to create your own 3D model.

The workshop will be held from Noon to 2:00pm on Wednesday, November 11.  Drop into the Gardner-Harvey Library TEC Lab at any point during the two hours, and we will show you your options for a 3D printing project.

The event is open to everyone on the Middletown Campus and in the greater Middletown community.  Everyone who attends the workshop will be given a $5 certificate for 3D printing in the TEC Lab.

Halloween-Themed Making in the TEC Lab!

Check out our workshop October 7th from 12-2, and learn how to make some wicked looking bottles and books that are perfect for the spooky season! Feel free to bring in your own bottles and books that you can decorate as well. 

To help us plan, please fill out this Google form and let us know if you are bringing your own item(s) to decorate, or what items you would like us to have available. We will provide one item per person.

"Fighting the Fog" - Author Reads and Discusses Her Writing Process

Join MUM Professor Andrea Hulshult at the Gardner-Harvey Library on Thursday, October 29 from 2:30pm-3:30pm.

She will be speaking about her novel, "Fighting the Fog," and the nine-year writing journey this book took her on. She will also discuss the writing process, importance of research, and different writing strategies. Light refreshments will be served.

Bio:

Andrea Hulshult is a visiting English professor and teaches Technical Writing. She is also a member of the agile faculty community. She is a resident of Liberty Township where she lives with her husband and two daughters. She leads the West Chester Library's Writer's Group.

"Fighting the Fog" Synopsis:
When Melanie "Mel" Alexander becomes a widow at age thirty after her Green Beret husband is killed in action, her life is immediately engulfed in a black fog. In this darkness, she quits her promising career as a special agent tracking missing people and retreats to her Washington, DC, brownstone to mourn. Her best friend, Kai Silva, moves in with her to help her cope. In order to try and reengage Mel with the world of the living, Kai convinces her that they should put their instincts to work as private investigators. After four years, Kai insists that they take a beach vacation after tracking a client to Costa Rica. Can sun, surfers, and her best friend bring Mel out of her fog and help her live and love again?

Kuznekoff Speaks On Texting and Learning, and Gender in Online Gaming

Join Jeffrey Kuznekoff (Communication) at the Gardner-Harvey Library to discuss his research and publications on October 1 from 2:30pm-3:30pm.  

Dr. Kuznekoff will discuss two main areas of research: the impact of texting on student learning and how people respond differently to men and women in online gaming. His work on the texting in the classroom has demonstrated that active use of mobile devices during class hinders student learning, note taking, and performance on tests. Dr. Kuznekoff's most recent research has demonstrated that men and women are treated differently in an online multiplayer video game, with women receiving more negative comments than men. Light refreshments will be served.

Jeffrey H. Kuznekoff is an Assistant Professor of Communication and joined Miami University Middletown in the fall of 2013.  His research interests focus on how people use new communication technologies to interact with others and the ways that communication is altered by these new technologies.  His general areas of research interest include: computer-mediated communication, interpersonal communication, and instructional communication.   His most recent work examines the influence of student texting messaging, during classroom lecture, on student learning (Communication Education) and investigating issues of gender voice in multiplayer video gaming (New Media & Society).  He has received several teaching awards, including the 2012 Pamela J. Cooper Award for Teaching by the Central States Communication Association.

Book Page Crafts at the TEC Lab

The library will be hosting a drop-in workshop September 2nd in our TEC Lab Makerspace. Stop by between 12pm and 2pm to make one of several book page crafts with materials provided by GHL. Use pages from some of our discarded books so you don’t have to ruin your own!

Projects available:

• Book page drink coasters- coasters with words! Mod Podge book pages onto coasters and be the envy of the office! 
• Book page art- Stamp, draw, or paint on a book page! The Etsy craze is easy to DIY, and we provide the materials. Frames not provided. 
• Votives- Decorate a candle holder with book pages and watch them glow.
• Stamped buttons and magnets- design your own button or magnet with book pages so you can show off your love for literacy.

Help Students Succeed: Support the Gardner-Harvey Library!

#MoveInMiami -- a one-day fundraiser for Miami University -- is on Thursday, August 20. It supports activities throughout the University, and the library has been added to the list of possible funds to receive donations. 

As an added bonus to regional campus donors and friends, Regional Campus Dean Mike Pratt and his wife Patty will personally contribute $10 to the fund of your choice for each new gift raised by 8/20 (a gift must be $5 or more and must be given to a regional campus fund).

This is an exciting opportunity for the library to raise gift funds to support our programming, add new books and technology, and provide services to students, faculty and staff members, and members of the Middletown community.  We hope to increase the number of textbooks and the number of laptops we are able to check out to students, and, as a stretch goal, to add a laser cutter to our TEC Lab makerspace.

The new library catalog is here!

The new library catalog is now in place for Miami University.  You will find it under the Books & More tab on our website.  A new searching guide for it has been made available that shows what search results look like and identifies new features.

And, even more guidance:  if you are looking for the Journal Titles tab, we had to remove it as part of the new catalog introduction.  However, you may still find journals in the new catalog using the tips in this handy guide.

If you have any difficulty accessing or using the new catalog, please use our Classic Catalog as a substitute.  And, please let us know what is happening so that we can address the issue.  Thank you, and enjoy the new catalog!

New library catalog arrives on August 10

Miami University Libraries is switching from our current library catalog to a new one starting on August 10.  The catalog will look and function much like our Articles & More database, but will just include books, e-books, DVDs, and other physical and electronic items owned by the libraries.

The catalog will look the same on our website (we'll still call it Books and More):

You may experience some interruption in service while we get the new catalog linked from the GHL website.  The catalog will be operational on the University Libraries website starting on the 10th.

If you use the Folder function in the current catalog, you will want to export any saved records for materials that you have in your Folder.  Please see the University Libraries blog for more instructions on exporting those records.
