Schedule library instruction for Spring 2025

We hope you all have had a warm and restful winter break. We are reaching out today to remind and encourage you to schedule your library instruction for the upcoming semester ðŸŽ‰

Recently, we have noticed a greater need for library instruction and support from our student body. Whether students weren't taught formal researching skills in their high school, they are our ECA students who are finishing out their high school experiences at Miami, or they just aren't confident navigating our current information landscape (use of AI, mis/disinformation, etc.), students need assistance learning the ins and outs of academic researching.

We strongly encourage instructors with research assignments in their syllabi this semester to work with us in the Regional Campus Libraries. Together, we can ensure that your students receive the support they need as they learn about conducting academic research for the first time or need help strengthening these skills.

When you contact us here at the libraries, we will work with you to determine what services would best meet your course needs. We offer in-class instruction, virtual instruction, and embedded instruction to both in-person and online classes. We also have research guides that can be added to your Canvas courses that walk students through the library resources that are best suited to complete your research assignments. There are many ways that we can assist you and your students and more information about these services can be found on our website: Rentschler Library - Services for Faculty. or for Middletown: Faculty Services (Middletown): Teaching & Classroom Support.

If you are ready to schedule an instruction session for a class at the Hamilton campus, you can fill out a Library Instruction Request form or contact Mark Shores at Mark.Shores@miamiOH.edu. If you want to schedule a session for a class at the Middletown campus, reach out to John Burke at burkejj@miamiOH.edu.

We appreciate your time and look forward to collaborating with you for a great spring semester.

February's Middletown Book for Discussion: Intermezzo (February 28)

The romantic couple, Dublin, Ireland

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Friday, February 28.  Our title is Intermezzo by Sally Rooney. Here is a brief summary:

"Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common. Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties -- successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude -- a period of desire, despair, and possibility; a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking."  (publisher)

Here is where you can find the book:
  • There are several copies available in MiamiOhioLINK, and SearchOhio libraries.
  • Amazon has the hardcover, paperback, and Kindle available, and Bookshop.org has links to purchase the title from independent booksellers.
Our group is always finding interesting titles to share, and we look forward to the new things you'll bring to the table. In addition to discussing An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good, the group also shared these titles for consideration at their January 3 meeting:

The Six Triple Eight (Netflix)
Thelma (Hulu)
How the Penguins Saved Veronica, Hazel Prior
The 13th Gift: A True Story of a Christmas Miracle, Joanne Huist Smith
Texas, James Michener
Ragnar Jonasson (Icelandic crime writer)
The Paris Novel, Ruth Reichl
Revenge of the Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell
Atomic Habits, James Clear
The Gap and The Gain: The High Achievers' Guide to Happiness, Confidence, and Success, Dan Sullivan
Light Pirate, Lily Brooks-Dalton
In Ascension, Martin MacInnes
Shoplifters (Peacock)

We will meet at 12 pm on the 28th both in Room 123 in the Library and in Zoom at

Passcode:  276688
Add this event to your Google Calendar!  (which includes the Zoom information)

Please come along to our discussion to share what you've been reading/watching/listening to/experiencing!
