October's Middletown Book for Discussion: When the Emperor Was Divine (Oct. 21)

Black and white photograph of "Los Angeles. The Amache Japanese Internment Camp."

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Friday, October 21.  Our title is Julie Otsuka's When the Emperor Was Divine.  Here is a brief summary:

"Otsuka's commanding debut novel paints a portrait of the Japanese internment camps unlike any previously written--a haunting evocation of a family in wartime and an unmistakably resonant lesson for our times. A story told from five different points of view chronicles the experiences of Japanese Americans caught up in the nightmare of the World War II internment camps."

Here is where you can find the book:
  • There are several copies available through MiamiOhioLINK, and SearchOhio.
  • Amazon has the hardcover, Kindle, and audiobook available, and Bookshop.org has links to purchase the title from independent booksellers.
Our group is always finding interesting titles to share, and we look forward to the new things you'll bring to the table.  In addition to discussing Crying in H-Mart, the group also shared these titles for consideration at their September 16 meeting:
  • When the Emperor Was Divine, Julie Otsuka (also the Buddha in the Attic and The Swimmers)
  • Thank You, Mr. Nixon, Gish Jen
  • Breathe, Joyce Carol Oates
  • The Way Life Should Be, Christina Baker Kline (a novel that includes recipes)
  • Diane Mott Davidson (another author who routinely includes recipes in her mystery novels)
  • Sue Grafton books (no recipes, but much enjoyed)
  • Sparring Partners, John Grisham
  • Pachinko, Min Jin Lee
  • Tracy Flick Can't Win, Tom Perrotta
  • The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, Becky Chambers
  • Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World--and Why Things Are Better Than You Think, Hans Rosling
  • The Phone Booth at the Edge of the World, Laura Imai Messina
  • The Daughters of Yalta, Catherine Grace Katz
We will meet at 12 pm on the 21st both in Room 123 in the Library and in Zoom at

We add many new items to the collection each month, and we hope you'll check some out. Take a look at our New Books shelves or the New Media Display (above) for some of the title, or skim down our new materials list of items we added to the collection in August!

We added 274 books, e-books, DVDs, and other items during that time, thanks to your selections and suggestions. The list can be sorted by call number, area of our collection, or by title. There is definitely something here for everyone!

This tag will show you all of the prior lists of new materials, in reverse chronological order. We are eager to hear from you about individual items you would like us to buy, or types of items we should be on the look out for, or general subject areas we should build up in the collection.

If you have a suggestion of something to order, please use our "Tell GHL to Buy It" form, email Alan Kelley (kelleya@miamioh.edu), or drop by the library with your request. And pass your general suggestions or comments about the collection to us in those same ways.

We're still at the beginning our fiscal year for 2022/23, and we have acquisitions funds aplenty.  We look forward to your suggestions of items to add to the collection.

The Regional Campus Libraries and the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are co-sponsoring a book discussion for students, faculty, and staff! Join us for our October discussion  where we will be reading
Girls Like Us by Randi Pink. We will meet on Thursday, October 13th, from 12:00PM-1:00PM, and our discussion will be led by Dr. Theresa Kulbaga.

The discussion will be simulcast to both locations of the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (100 Johnston Hall at Middletown and 114 Rentschler Hall at Hamilton) for attendees who would like to meet face-to-face. You will also be able to attend via Zoom. Lunch will be provided for face-to-face attendees.

Below is a brief synopsis of the book:
Set in the summer of 1972, this moving YA historical novel is narrated by teen girls from different backgrounds with one thing in common: Each girl is dealing with pregnancy.
Four teenage girls. Four different stories. What they all have in common is that they’re dealing with unplanned pregnancies.

In rural Georgia, Izella is wise beyond her years, but burdened with the responsibility of her older sister, Ola, who has found out she’s pregnant. Their young neighbor, Missippi, is also pregnant, but doesn’t fully understand the extent of her predicament. When her father sends her to Chicago to give birth, she meets the final narrator, Susan, who is white and the daughter of an anti-choice senator. (Goodreads)

Please use our sign up form so we will know if you're coming to one of the Centers for lunch, or if you'll join us on Zoom.  You can also tell us how you'd like to receive your free copy of the book (provided by the Center for Diversity , Equity, and Inclusion).

Thank you to our wonderful sponsors:
