November's Middletown Book for Discussion: The Madstone (November 21)

Image from 1865 of a stagecoach.

The MUM Book Discussion group will next meet on Friday, November 21.  Our title is The Madstone by Elizabeth Crook.  Here is a brief summary:

"Texas hill country, 1868. As nineteen-year-old Benjamin Shreve tends to business in his workshop, he witnesses a stagecoach strand a passenger. When the man, a treasure hunter, persuades Benjamin to help track down the vanished coach--and a mysterious fortune left aboard--Benjamin is drawn into a drama whose scope he could never have imagined, for they discover on reaching the coach that its passengers include Nell, a pregnant young woman, and her four-year-old son, Tot, who are fleeing Nell's brutal husband and his murderous brothers." (publisher)

Here is where you can find the book (well, this gets interesting):
  • There are currently no copies at Miami or in OhioLINK, but I have ordered a copy for the Gardner-Harvey Library, and hope to have it arrive this week (please check with me if you need it).
  • SearchOhio, allowing for lending among over 40 public library systems in Ohio, was supposed to be back in action yesterday, but is now delayed. If you have a card for MidPointeLane, or Cincinnati Public, you can find available copies through those systems. Germantown Public Library does not have a copy of their own, but they are part of the SEO (Serving Every Ohioan) Consortium, and there are 38 copies available from those libraries. And SearchOhio might hop into action in a few days, so check through your local public library for additional copies from around Ohio.
  • Amazon has the hardcover, paperback, and Kindle available, and Bookshop.org has links to purchase the title from independent booksellers.
Our group is always finding interesting titles to share, and we look forward to the new things you'll bring to the table. In addition to discussing My Friends, the group also shared these titles for consideration at their October 24 meeting:

C-SPAN's America's Book Club (TV show and podcast)
Beartown and A Man Called Ove, Frederik Backman
Daniel Silva (author)
Susan Vineland (author)
All In Her Head, Elizabeth Komen
Carole King, Jane Eisner
How the Light Gets In, Louise Penny
The Mighty Red, Louise Erdrich
The Covenant of Water, Abraham Verghese
All the Colors of the Dark, Chris Whitaker

We will meet at 11:30 am on the 21st both in Room 123 in the Library and in Zoom at

Passcode:  151544
Add this event to your Google Calendar!  (which includes the Zoom information)

Please come along to our discussion to share what you've been reading/watching/listening to/experiencing!

If you're looking for something interesting to read, check out our page of past and future reads at http://www.mid.miamioh.edu/library/bookdiscussion.htm
